What is link building?
Link building is a promotional online tool that produces link popularity and increases PageRank for a website by linking other websites. To produce link popularity, links are placed on others sites to attract Web-goers to other sites. Link building is an important device to increase a website’s placement on major search engines.
Why is link building important?
Link building will create a higher ranking in major search engines with competitive keywords (such as Google, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, AltaVista, and MSN) . A high keyword ranking is important because search engines rank search results based on a site’s link popularity.
A website is considered more valuable and will receive a higher ranking based on the number of links it has on other sites. The more links a site has on other sites, the more powerful it becomes.
In addition to counting links connected to your site, search engines recognize the types of links pointing to your site. Links connected to your site with high popularity ratings signifies that your site is even more valuable. Therefore, a couple of links placed on quality sites is much more valuable than 1,000 links placed on unpopular sites.
Some search engines can even recognize the subject matter of sites that are linked to your site. Therefore, if a coffee maker site is linked to your site, search engines will assume that your site is somehow related to coffee. If so, your site could be ranked higher on coffee keywords.
“The more links your site has, the higher its PageRank will be…”

What does PageRank mean?
Google created a formula called PageRank, a search engine algorithm that tracks the number of sites linked to another page. Based on this, PageRank will designate a score for the site on a scale of 1-10. So (not to be redundant) the more links you get from other sites, the higher the PageRank you’ll get. By downloading the SEO Toolbar for Firefox, you can check a website’s PageRank value.
“PageRank will score your website on a scale of 1-10.”

On what sites should links be placed?
It is important to choose sites that relate to your business. For instance, if you sell coffee mugs, place links on a website for coffee makers or coffee beans. This will accumulate more traffic for your site than if you placed a link on a site for pinball machines.
Website quality and relevance is also important because not only will it increase your site’s PageRank, your site is more likely to attract quality visitors from the sites that linked to you.
Types of Link Building
This is an exchange between your site and another. The two websites reciprocate – your link is placed on their site, and their link is placed on yours.
2. One-way Link (a.k.a. only-incoming link or non-reciprocal link)
This is when your link is placed on a site, but their link is not placed on yours.
Which ever type of link you choose, your website traffic and PageRank value will increase.
How do you get other sites to link you?
Negotiation and a mutual agreement (like a reciprocal link) is usually necessary. So if you find a website that you would like to have link to you, just contact them and ask.
For maximum results, search for high quality, relevant sites with a high PageRank, because if a site is linked to several high quality sites, search engines will rank it higher.
