Apple iPhone updates mobile media

If you have a mobile device that allows for Web browsing (unlike me), then you probably know that your favorite websites have mobile alter-egos.

If you don’t have that kind of device, let me explain.

Most major websites have created mobile versions of themselves, consisting of less pictures and more condensed information.

web-to-mobile

This wasn’t always the case. Before Apple released the iPhone, many websites simply directed users to the normal version of their website, which took a long time to load and was sometimes hard to use.

Now, with the release of the iPhone, more sites have begun optimizing websites for the mobile experience, creating miniature versions of their sites, revamped to reflect some of the differences of the small mobile screen.

Original mobile internet involved waiting for screens to load, zooming in to read content, and being able to see only a small percentage of the whole website at any given time.

When the iPhone first came out, demonstrations were done using the New York Times’ unoptimized website, and it was interesting, but still short of awe-inspiring.

Mobile content is being rebuilt. While mobile devices get smaller, PCs are upping storage space and screen size to allow for multimedia use, like videos and games.

Using Web content for multimedia is just dandy on a PC, but websites designed for PCs that stream videos don’t cut it on a 3-inch screen. Sites like YouTube, the number one mobile site in the U.S., have been rebuilt into mobile-friendly sites to create a more comfortable viewing experience for users.

The expanse of possibilities smartphones have today is only beginning to be tapped by the online market. Updating websites to mobile versions is the ideal way of expanding mobile possibilities. Leaving users to explore your wired site can create frustration and lower usage.
